Under the supervision of a pharmacist, pharmacy technicians perform routine pharmacy functions including receiving prescriptions from patients in writing or electronically from physicians,  prepares prescriptions by counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and mixing the medication if necessary, and maintain patient profiles; prepare insurance claim forms, stock, and take inventory of medications.  In Outpatient Pharmacy, the incumbent  independently input refill prescriptions into VistA computer system for immediate mail-out processing; Processes batch refill prescription ordering for mail-out processing and ultimate fulfillment of patient requests; Interacts personally with patients or their representatives to assure medication profiles are updated, reviewed, and needed prescription items are appropriately processed; Processes medication orders directly for pharmacist check; Accurately fills prescription orders by selecting correct product based on label requirements and assures each item is filled and labeled according to all applicable standards; Edits and corrects prescription label information as necessary; Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding outpatient procedures; and Identifies basic therapeutic problems, such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class, and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention. Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Requirements:

a. Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.

b. Education or Experience.  A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

c. Physical Requirements.  Physical examination prior to placement may be required.

d. English Language Proficiency.  Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

In addition to basic requirements, at the GS-5 grade level, Completion of one of the following is required:

Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; OR Experience: at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level.

In addition, the candidates at this grade level must demonstrate the following KSAs:

    1.  Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.

    2.  Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.

    3.  Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.

    4.  Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.

This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians.  Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision.

Examples of specialized experience include routine pharmacy functions including receiving prescriptions from patients in writing or electronically from physicians; preparing prescriptions by counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and mixing the medication if necessary; maintaining patient profiles; preparing insurance claim forms, stock, and taking inventory of medications. 

 

You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.

Current federal employees must meet time-in-grade restrictions by the closing date of this announcement.

Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
